While my sister-in-law – Alli – was here this past weekend, she asked if we could do some maternity photos.I said absolutely!!
I asked if she had anything in particular in mind.Other than the one gown she brought, this was her response: “Not really…I’m just here so you make me look good.”
Oooo fun – I can certainly do that!
There were a few new looks I wanted to try.And with Alli up for really anything, we went for it.
In the middle of the shoot she turned to me and said, “I am so excited about these photos!I’ve been looking on Facebook and Instagram at everyone who’s pregnant. They all have the same photo…wearing the same dress…photographed in the same field. But what you’ve done is so beautiful and so different.I haven’t felt sexy being pregnant, but you’ve definitely made me feel sexy today!”
Alli, I am so happy I could make you feel beautiful for the day.Thank you for trusting my vision.I cannot wait to meet sweet Ada James in just a few short months!
Last fall I discovered the incredibly talented maternity photographer, Lola Melani.During her presentation she described her journey of growing up in Russia, having little money, sewing their own clothes, and her dream of having enough money to finally be able to afford silk.
Fabric was literally woven and touched every aspect of her life.
When she moved to New York and began her photography career, she wanted her work to be reflective of her past. She wanted simplicity. So she decided to wrap the beautiful women who came to her in the fabric she had always dreamt of and now could afford to buy – silk.
This resonated with me.I love simple and raw photographs. In a world of distractions, I want the woman in front of my camera to know she does not blend into the background. She stands out.She is someone worthy of others’ attention.I want her to be the sole subject.Where she is recognized as the stunning woman she is.
So with inspiration that became ignited within me, I asked my dear friend, Lacy, if she would step in front of my camera and allow me to create something new.Something I’ve not attempted before.I wanted to keep it simple.I wanted the final images to also give a nod to the grain found in film – photography’s original medium. And here’s what bloomed…
Most people hate having their photo taken because they’re not “photogenic” or they feel awkward in front of a camera.
Now, this may come as a shocker, but…there is no such thing as a “photogenic” gene.I know!I was just as shocked at you!!When I took genetics back in college, I was sure that was a typo.Nonetheless…it’s sad, but true.
Now, I’d like to spend sometime on the “feeling awkward in front of the camera” part.I can totally relate to this. How am I supposed to stand? How am I supposed to pose?I feel awkward and stiff…I feel like I look like a deer in the headlights…And for goodness sake, what the heck am I supposed to do with my hands?!?!
Yep, been there.Felt that. And I see that in the eyes of almost every client…
So I’d like to give you some comfort.
It’s my job to guide you through your entire photo shoot – from start to finish.I listen to exactly how you want to be photographed.Want full glam?!Let’s do it.Want super chill and relaxed?Done!Want to show off the hard work you put in to transform your body?Yes – let’s celebrate you!
You are guided you through all the poses, so you don’t have to think about what to do.And so you feel comfortable and relaxed…which ends up being reflected back in your photos.

And in the end, you end up with the most beautiful photos you’ve ever seen of yourself.
Today is officially my first day back to work – the littles are back in school and I have a solid five whole hours to myself.
Looking back at 2018, it truly does take my breath away. This time last year I asked a friend if I could photograph her because I wanted to explore a new subject other than babies. That subject was women.
What a passion it became…What enormous growth came from it…And to be recognized and honored – from top photographers in the industry – with four bronze awards at The Portrait Masters. It was more than I could even fathom would come to fruition back in January 2018.
So I sit here on my front porch typing this out…enjoying this unusually warm January day.Letting the sun hit me.Listening to the birds chirp. And thinking about all the possibilities this coming year can and will bring.I just love the excitement that a new year brings.
With that, I want to extend a huge thank you to my clients. You mean the world to me.I am so thankful for each and every one of you.Being on the front side of any camera means you have to trust the person behind it.Thank you for not only trusting me, but being vulnerable and showing the depths of your souls.
Cheers to 2019!
